Undergraduate Research in Dramaturgy July 2025
As part of Wake Forest’s Undergraduate Research and Creative Activities Center (URECA) summer research fellowship, I served as a dramaturg for Complicit, a new play commissioned by Flying Solo! Presents. Written by Professor Jon Herbert, Assistant Professor of Theatre at Wake Forest, the piece centers on the life of James Mars, a Black man born into slavery in Connecticut in 1790. It also explores the complex history of slavery in New England, which is a past that has often been overlooked or erased. Work included in-depth historical research, script development feedback, and providing contextual support to help shape the play’s narrative and authenticity. Complicit is scheduled for a preview production at Curious Theatre Company in Denver, Colorado in June 2027, followed by another preview at 59E59 Theatre in New York City in July. The play will then travel to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in August 2027.
